Profesora de antropología y ex decana de la Escuela de Ciencias Sociales de Hampshire College. Su investigación en las décadas de 1970 y 1980 se centró en temas relacionados con legislación y comunidad en Suecia y Estados Unidos (Virtuous Citizens, Disruptive Subjects: Order and Complaint in a New England Court, Routledge, 1993; Law and Community in Three American Towns, Cornell, 1994, co-authored with Carol Greenhouse and David Engel, awarded the Law and Society Association Book Prize in 1996).
Durantelos últimos diez años, con financiación de dos becas de la National Science Foundation, ha estudiado el mercado transnacional de niños, específicamente el flujo de niños de Asia y América Latina hacia Suecia y Estados Unidos.
Su investigación más reciente analiza experiencias de personas adultas adoptadas en temas de identidad y pertenencia en el contexto de adopciones transraciales/transnacionales y su influencia en las teorías sobre identidad en antropología y psicología.
